Creative Community Challenges
A secondary school in South Africa challenges each of its students to use the design process to find a need in their local community and design a long term solution that will meet that need. Since the school was founded in 2008, the students have already begun to transform their community. Some exemplary projects include the following:
Mathma Help: Students designed this program to address the lack of access to high-quality math resources in Port Elizabeth schools in South Africa. The students designed a DVD math program that could be available to all students given their limited access to technological resources. The project team hoped to increase the number of students prepared for university in multiple schools in the area.
HACA (Human Alliance for Cancer Awareness): Students designed this program to create cancer awareness by sparking the interest of the youth and prompting them to practice simple preventative measures. They developed an 8-week curriculum that integrates knowledge about cancer causes and motivates preventative behavior with fun and entertaining activities for youth. They started a social movement on their school campus with their UV-color change wristbands that indicate UV exposure.
